Everyone was saying that with Nasharuddin retaining his No 2 post, PAS committee members prefers the Ulama to lead the party. All i can said was WRONG!!!! Nasharuddin received 480 votes, while Husam Musa and Mat Sabu both garnered 281 and 261 votes respectively. Didn’t you get it, the committee members actually voted for the “progressive” group, if only either one of Husam or Mat Sabu contested, they would have won it. Now, no matter who has won, we expect nothing short from a good governance in Pakatan Rakyat. At the last election the people voted for a strong opposition, not a stronger UMNO or BN, thus the alliance between PKR,PAS and DAP must be maintain.

Nasharuddin retains PAS No 2 post (Malaysiakini)

pas muktamar nasharuddin win post 060609 02PAS incumbent deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa retained his post for the third term, staving off a challenge from senior exco member Husam Musa. He garnered 480 votes against Husam’s 281 while outgoing vice-president Mohamad Sabu bagged 261 votes.

Nasharuddin’s victory came after strong speculation that Husam has won the race. Some delegates believed both Husam and Mohamad Sabu took votes away from each other as the duo share the same view on cooperation with rival UMNO.

Nasharuddin garnered less than half, or 46.8 percent, of the total votes cast.

Polling was held yesterday afternoon at the PAS 55th Muktamar and the vote counting took more than seven hours last night. A total of 1,044 delegates from 176 PAS divisions nationwide cast their votes for the top party posts for the 2009 to 2011 tenure.

Meanwhile, the three vice-presidents posts have been won by Pahang state chief Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man (877 votes), former Youth chief Salahuddin Ayub (825), information chief Mahfuz Omar (636) in a five-cornered fight.

The other two candidates are Kelantan state exco Nik Amar Nik Abdullah (333) and Penang deputy chief Mujahid Yusof Rawa (277).

PAS delegates prefer Ulama faction

The two losing candidates – Husam and Mohamad – were previously party vice-presidents before deciding to try their luck for the deputy presidency.

pas muktamar 55 general assembly 060609 05With Nasharuddin’s win, PAS delegates sent a strong message that they would prefer the ‘ulama’ (religious scholars) faction to continue the party until 2011.

Nasharuddin’s sizable margin of victory of 199 votes over Husam indicated that the conservative ulama faction is still very much dominant in the party. Husam, Kelantan Menteri Besar Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat’s protege, is seen as representing the party’s ‘professionals’ faction.

In the run-up to polling yesterday, he had lobbied against Nasharuddin – who is Bachok MP – for pursuing talks with UMNO for a ‘unity government’ following the 12th general election last year which saw the opposition make huge gains.

The ulama camp and the youth division during the mukatmar on Thursday had debated fiercely, stressing the need for the posts of party president, deputy president and one of the three vice-presidents to be retained by the ulama.

However, the motion to bring this matter up for debate during the main muktamar was rejected by PAS information chief Mahfuz Omar yesterday who said that since the motion involved party constitution amendments, it would first have to be debated by the central committee.

Everyone got it wrong

At a press conference after the official announcement, PAS elections director Mustafa Ali said that 1,026 out of 1,044 delegates had voted in the elections.

There were four spoilt votes for the deputy president race while the others were not present in the hall when voting took place at 3pm yesterday. According to him, the balloting lasted three hours while vote counting was from 7.30pm to 2am.

The party elections director said that no recount was necessary as the margin of victory for all posts was significant. Mustafa added that the unofficial results which was carried by online news websites did not come from PAS officials. Apparently, all online news websites, including Malaysiakini, had got the results wrong.

The PAS election committee which was headed by Mustafa has kept a tight lid on the results. “Last night, I have instructed them to turn off their phones and not to entertain any phone calls. Even the party president complained about not reaching them,” said Mustafa. He also refused to comment on the election results, saying that it was up to journalists to decipher the outcome of the polls.

Nizar tops central committee polls

Meanwhile, ousted Perak menteri besar Mohd Nizar Jamaluddin bagged the highest number of votes in crowded race for the 18 party central working committee seats. Mujahid, who lost in the vice-president contest, managed to sneak into the Top 18 list.

A total of six candidates elected into the powerful committee are seen closed to the Erdogan camp – Dzulkefly Ahmad, Kamaruddin Jaafar, Syed Azman, Lo’ Lo Ghazali and Hatta Ramli and Nizar. However, well-known progressive within the party Khalid Abd Samad, who is Shah Alam MP, failed to make it. Another six of the elected members are considered more neutral are Abdul Ghani Abdul Rahman, Amiruddin Hamzah, Taib Azamudden Md Taib, Azizan Abd Razak, Abdul Ghani Samsudin and Mazlan Aliman.
